Class 3 had a very artistic start to this half term with a trip out to the Lakeside Art Gallery on the University of Nottingham campus. The weather was kind to us and we were able to sit outside to sketch and paint the view out across the lake, marveling at all of the wildlife including a rather impressive fish that leapt out of the water mid-drawing! After we’d completed our initial sketches of the landscape, we ventured into the exhibition “Scaling the Sublime”, a collection of installations, videos and paintings that really engaged the children and, for some of them, gave them their first taste of contemporary art. When we’d finished discussing whether you were meant to view some of the pictures upside down or not, we settled down to have lunch on the grass outside the gallery before venturing into the play area to let off some steam. We then set off on a scenic walk around the lake, chancing across some fellow artists who were also taking advantage of the beautiful landscape. Then came the moment I think the children had been looking forward to all day…ice cream time! Just before setting off back to school, we had to time to finalise our paintings of the landscape and say goodbye to our wonderful host from the gallery, Jodie.

A big thank you to our lovely parent helpers for joining us on our artistic day out and to Lakeside Art Gallery for hosting some very excited Year 3 children!
